Further, looking at many early videogames using XP, like Final Fantasy, the classes are closer to AD&D the inclusion of Rangers, Assassins, or Druids, and separation of Race and Class are classic features of AD&D that were absent in Moldvay. Therefore, it is most likely that AD&D is the popular source, not Moldvay's Basic D&D. Moldvay was quite popular, while it lasted, but had less lasting impact. Moldvay also was not in print as long (it was replaced in 1983) where AD&D was in print with literally only cosmetic changes until 1988‡ or so. You have to spend points to be a hammer master, but you also can’t master hammers and shovels EVEN IF you want to waste all those points. Sometimes 'dont cap killl all' is worth it, other times capping is better. However, you must balance whether capping and securing the win is more important than chasing down the remaining enemies and risking the game. Therefore, Moldvay is not the origination of the use. Boundless has limited skill points + everything draws from them + you get locked out of certain epics. But your skill points are not shared between the skill sets. Thats great I dont want to make a million characters just so I can craft and build. You can unlock a few skill sets you can swap between. So you could max out one skill set, or have 50 in one, and 50 in. If you're level 50, you have 100 skill points to divide between skill sets. For example, If you're level 25, you have 50 skill points to divide between skill sets. Runequest (1976) and Traveller (1977) didn't use experience points at all.ġ974 & 1976 † Original Edition D&D doesn't use XP nor EP. Right now from what I understand, buying an extra skill set before level 50 is pointless and a total waste of cubits. You get 4 skill points for each level after 50, and you can put a maximum of 100 skill points into one skill tree. Timelineġ975 Tunnels and Trolls uses either AP (Adventure Points) or EP, depending upon edition. It's worth noting that other early games did not use XP. ![]()
